Greetings, Gentle Reader,

My name is Elizabeth McManus. My family calls me Bess, but I am known to the world as E.M. McManus, author of crime novels. Perhaps you've seen some of my work – it's quite popular these days. Of course, no one knows these grisly tales of mystery and murder are written by a woman. And if you met me, you would never guess I was capable of creating such gruesome works of fiction. Well, I'll let you in on a little secret: not only am I capable, but not all my work is fiction. Indeed, much of what you read in my dime novels is based on personal experience. You would never know it to look at me, of course. And because I could never reveal my true identity to my publisher ( no one would take me seriously) the only place you will read the truth about my adventures is in this journal. So I invite you to share my adventures, from the comfort and safety of your parlor, of course, and live vicariously as I travel the world in search of stories of mayhem and murder. I assure you, you shall never be bored.
